I have an iPhone 4s. As of the recent release of the iPhone X, I am 6 generations behind. What better person to review the new iOS 11 than someone who can’t upgrade past iOS 9?

After experimenting with iOS 11, I immediately became jealous. It has fantastic features that are definitely worth the short time it takes to update. I spent some time on my friend’s phone this weekend who had updated her iPhone 7 to iOS 11, and besides it being wickedly fast compared to mine, there are quite a lot of changes to the operating system.

The most striking changes happened within the Control Center, which is the little shortcut menu that you find by swiping up. With the update, it functions more like the widgets on a Mac computer. In one swipe up, timers can be set, the flashlight brightness can be adjusted, and notes can be made without transferring to a new app.

The biggest change to the Control Center is the ability to record your screen without a third party app. This is useful for sending screenshots of long conversations to someone else for us drama lovers, but I’ve found that it erases an element of privacy on Snapchat. Whereas Snapchat previously detected someone screenshotting a photo, the app does not alert the sender if the other person is recording their screen. This is a breech to safety for people sending Snaps meant to be contained in the 10 second limit.

Moving away from the Control Center, the new iOS caters to the life of the lazy. My favorite new features are that the camera recognizes QR codes, no need for apps that take up storage. Speaking of storage, the update recommends apps, old photos, or long videos to delete that are taking up the most storage without any use.

In the few hours that I spent using it, i found iOS 11 to be full of things I didn’t know I wanted until now. This update is so innovative and easy to use that I’m seriously considering finally upgrading my iPhone 4s.
