For the first time in BHHS history, a Latino Student Alliance has been created where people of every ethnicity can come together to celebrate Latin-American culture.

“I’m really excited to see non-Latin students and Latin students come together to celebrate the beauty of latin culture” said Jackie Garcia, president and founder of LSA.

Spanish teacher and LSA supervisor Dayana Schemel gave insight as to how LSA will benefit both the latin and non-latin student body.

“[LSA] promotes respect for diversity. It will teach others about different cultures and will also increase pride among the Latin and Hispanic students,” said Schemel. “I would like to see non Latin-Hispanic students learn about our culture, experience it and value it as well as appreciate our cuisine, cinema and traditions”

Garcia explained where she plans to take the club in terms of events and volunteering opportunities.

“Other than just eating and learning, we’re also hoping to team up with Hispanic Outreach to plan volunteering events and potentially host some fundraisers to donate money and give back to the Latin community,” said Garcia.

Schemel encourages people to join, stating that “Latin culture is very friendly, lively and welcoming, we are a fun group of people with lots to share. We meet in E201 on alternating Tuesdays starting January 30. Come and hangout with us!”
