Performing For a Cause

On Friday, February 23rd, Bloomfield Hills High School’s Broken Leg Theatre Co. is putting on a “Broadway Benefit”, a show in which proceeds will be donated to Camp Casey.

“All proceeds go towards the organization called Camp Casey which is a horseback therapy group that works with children who have pediatric cancer and rare blood diseases,” Teacher Tina Greenlee said. “I got involved with Camp Casey a few years ago, and I found that what they did was very cool, it helps so many children have a day of fun and to forget what they are going through. We have so many talented students here and I thought this would be a great way for them to do something that they love and be able to give back to a good cause.”

The benefit will take place at 7:30 in the BHHS Performing Arts Center.  Within this show, students will perform various acts which will all be from Broadway. “Students come with they want to showcase,” Greenlee said. “We have singers, dancers, actors, musicians, and the only stipulation is that it has to come from Broadway.”

Between acts, there will be a silent auction in which a variety of donated items will be auctioned off, with all proceeds going towards Camp Casey. “There are 83 auction items available,” Greenlee said. “They range from items such as concert tickets to jewelry, there is a huge selection. You can’t even imagine how wonderful and generous people have been.”

Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students.

This is the second time the theatre has put on a benefit for Camp Casey. Last year, they raised ten thousand dollars for the camp. “I hope that this year we will raise more money than last year,” Junior Julia Russo said. “We’re always trying to outdo ourselves, not only by raising the most amount of money but by giving the best performance possible.”

In order to perform, students must first audition. “The audition process is unlike it is for many other shows,” Senior Mia Morelli said. “You can sing, dance, act, play an instrument, or anything you want!  It just had to be a selection from a broadway show.”

This show doesn’t only benefit Camp Casey, it also benefits those who have the opportunity to perform. “I perform in the show because while I love performing in general,” Morelli said. “Knowing that what I’m doing is for a bigger purpose makes it that much more meaningful to those performing. We are able to share our passions for something good which makes us feel good.”
