School Security

I’m Roni Kane with a WBFH editorial.

With the February 14th Orlando school shooting fresh in the minds and hearts of all Americans, many different ideas have come up in order to make sure that schools remain a safe place for students. BBC reports that sheriffs all over the nation support arming teachers, positioning armed security guards at entrances, and using metal detectors in order to minimize the damage that guns can cause on school campuses. However, this is absolutely NOT the right course of action for schools to take in terms of student protection. Such measures would make students feel as though they were entering a prison grounds rather than a learning environment. Additionally, introducing firearms, in the hands of either teachers or security guards, has the potential to cause more issues than it solves. While future school shootings must be prevented, the answer lies in better gun control laws rather than extreme school security measures.

The views expressed are not necessarily those of WBFH, its management, staff, or the Bloomfield Hills school district. I’m Roni Kane and you’re listening to 88.1.
