I found my voice

Walking into the building not knowing anything or anyone was a challenge, especially for someone who struggles to come out of my comfort zone.  Throughout my ninth and tenth grade years I felt lost not knowing where to go; I went through the basic English classes but nothing really connected to my passions and goals. I was always curious – looking for answers and afraid to ask questions – but that is not me any more.

In the middle of my tenth-grade year, I joined Intro to Broadcasting where I learned skills to train me for the classes I enjoy today. The next semester, I joined the WBFH staff. This is where I found my voice. The place I could talk about anything that came into my mind was in this classroom. A big moment of coming out of my shell was interviewing superintendent Watson at halftime of a basketball game.

I am so thankful to have the opportunity to get experience from a radio station and a television on the high school level. Not many kids can say they have that in high school.

On the air was not the only place where I found my voice, though. When I joined The Hawkeye staff this past year, I was not exactly sure how I would manage writing in three different writing styles from TV, Radio, and now Newspaper. However, it became like home to me. After all, I want to study journalism at Michigan State University, but when I walked through the doors my ninth-grade year, I never would have thought I would be the strong leader I am today walking out the door.

As one chapter closes a new one begins where I look to carry on my strengths of being a vocal leader who can always get something done in a flash.
