Conant Science Fair Takes High School Help

Anatomy and Physics teacher Lindsey Deluca is offering a community service opportunity to her students to volunteer at Conant Elementary School Science Fair run by the Ann Arbor Hands on Museum on January 18th.

“This is a great partnership between the high school and a district elementary school.  Some high school students who don’t usually interact with younger children realized what a great experience it could be,” said Deluca.

Since last year, Deluca has been taking a bulk of her students to the science fair. This year, about 100 students are planning on volunteering, with a waitlist growing as well.

Deluca believes that this opportunity is “a great opportunity for high school science students to give back to the community and teach a new generation of up-and-coming scientists.”

Volunteers at the fair echo the opinions of Deluca that this opportunity is both enriching and educational.

“I think it’s important to be involved in your community and help out others,” said junior Regan Lee, a volunteer at the science fair. “I’m the most excited to work with the kids.”

Volunteers will start the night with a “one hour training from 5-6pm, and then run a table-based science experiment for the hundreds of children and parents that will attend the event,” said Deluca.

With success in the past, the science fair is planned to continue in the future.

“Last year was the first year we helped out at the event,” said Deluca. “There were so many comments from the elementary parents about how great it was to see the interactions between the older students and their children.”

If you are considering attending the science fair, stop by Conant Elementary School from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, January 18.
