Hawkeye staff members win awards at MIPA 2016
The Hawkeye got on the board not once, but twice at the 2016 MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop awards ceremony.
Anish Tamhaney and Jessica Kim—both new members on the staff—received awards for their work in their classes throughout the week. Tamhaney received an award of excellence (the second highest distinction), while Kim received a Sparty Award (the top honor possible at the program).
The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) offers 24 classes to its attendees, in areas such as writing, graphic design, photography, and multimedia journalism. The program is directed towards various high school student media organizations such as newspapers, yearbooks, and broadcast TV.
Hundreds of students from across the state made their way out to East Lansing for the program, staying in the dorms at Michigan State University.
In addition to the daily lessons taught by advisers from around the state, MIPA campers got to take part in press conferences with Pulitzer Prize winners M.L. Elrick of the Detroit Free Press and Farah Stockman of the New York Times.
Overall, a busy week resulted in a great deal of experience in student journalism and two awards for our new staff members.
