Laughter is the best medicine
Disney Plus’s Monsters at Work keeps scares at bay
Let’s be honest here, most spin-offs of major media suck. However, the new Disney Plus spin-off from Pixar’s Monsters Inc film series is delightful. Monsters at Work starts off right where Monsters, Inc. left off.
The show begins with promotions for Sully and Mike. Sully as CEO and Mike as the senior Co-president of Monsters, Incorporated. If you’ve seen Monsters University, you’ll know they started in the mailroom and now they are running the place!
Meanwhile, in Monstropolis, the monsters learn that the scream factory is not generating enough power to keep the city running. With a lot of contemplation, Mike realizes that Children’s laughter is a more potent source of power than screams, Changing Monsters Inc. into a place of joy. After all, “it’s laughter we’re after.”
Some of the monsters of Monstropolis were not happy with that decision; however, Mike decides to make the most out of it. Mike’s comedy classes are there to aid the monsters’ transition. Luckily, viewers get to see Mike’s comedy class air as a short segment at the end of each episode before the credits roll.
Monsters at work focus on Tylor Tuskman, a new recruit from Monsters University. When he arrives, he finds out his hard work to become a scarer is gone and he becomes frustrated. He spent all this time becoming a scarer and believes he wasted a college degree on something that is now nonexistent.
Instead of cutting his losses, Tylor reluctantly takes a job in the maintenance department while he works out his situation. Working in Monsters Inc Facilities Team (MIFT), he helps repair door jams, maintenance the doors, and other tasks monsters around him don’t notice.
Upon joining MIFT, Tylor meets Val, Duncan, Fritz, Cutter, and Banana Bread. All of whom have a quirks that makes them so lovable.
After watching Monsters at Work, it reminded me of how much I love Monsters Inc. So I went back and watched Monsters Inc and Monsters University. Solidifying the fact that both of those movies are better. Even though Monsters at Work is a spin-off, it just feels like a money grab for Disney to add to their streamable shows. It felt as if they just threw in Mike and Scully to have an appeal to older viewers to tune in and watch.
Each episode was released weekly in the summer, so all ten episodes are available to stream on Disney Plus. Monsters at Work also gives some closure as to what happened to some of the beloved Monsters of Monstropolis.
Even with the younger viewer appeal, I still really enjoyed the show and seeing how much technology has changed and become better. While watching, I also noticed how much better the graphics are in the show. With advancements in technology and more experience; Disney has been able to improve the quality of their productions much more. Making the show feel more realistic, it truly sucked me in and I didn’t even feel like I was watching animation. It just felt so real! Even though MIFT will never live up to the high expectations that Monsters Inc. step up, I still really liked the show and it’s definitely a show you can get cozy and watch al in one sitting. I hope they renew it for a second season, I would love to see what Tylor and the rest of the MIFT gang are up to now!
For passionate fans, Monsters at Work brings back some of its iconic characters such as Mike, Sully, and Celia. Monsters at Work is a superb watch for anyone. If you are looking for a nostalgic watch or even just a quick watch, Monsters at Work is the show for you!
