If you are reading this, you probably have wondered if you are too old to trick or treat. The same way that I have. As a kid, trick or treating on Halloween night was an event which I looked forward to for months. Not only did I look forward to wearing my costume (even though my Mom made me cover it with a coat), but I looked forward to the simple strolling of the streets and the Halloween spirit in the air. The occasional first snow of the season always amplified my excitement.
So, I think it’s time to answer the question. Should there be an age limit to trick or treating? Well, this question can get pretty complex. I believe that the short answer is no. There should be no unwritten age limit to trick or treating because you are just as young as you feel. It is so important to be able to express and embrace your inner-child after you have physically become an adult. To be able to do the little things, like trick or treating on Halloween, can be a great way to connect with and center yourself.
On the other hand, it is said that Trick or Treating after the age of 12 is not only not fun anymore, but that you are taking away the opportunity for more young children to enjoy Halloween candies and treats. Some jurisdictions in the United States have rules against Trick or treating over the age of 12. They believe that it is simply common sense. After this age, you are too old to spend your Halloween night trick or treating.
While this debate may seem lighthearted, and maybe even a little bit silly, there is a component to it that is more profound. Oftentimes, we associate Trick or treating with halloween. But when you take a look under the surface, you will notice that this is not all there is to it. Childhood and happy memories can also be associated with Trick or treating. As we age, the loss of simple fun can impact us a lot in negative ways. To feel shameless and excited about something because you want to do it is something that adults and teenagers could significantly benefit from.
