Oftentimes, we hype fixate on the small things in life rather than cherishing the limited time we get to spend with the people we love. We Live In Time, a recently released film, is directed by John Cowler and stars Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield. This dynamic duo flawlessly depicts the highs and lows of life, while making it very clear that we do in fact live in time.
Almut (Florence Pugh) is a detail oriented chef, who spends most of her time perfecting recipes of European cuisine. Tobias (Andrew Garfield) is rather prudent. Fittingly, he works as a salesman for Weetabix cereal, a staple in almost every British pantry. Their meet-cute is charming yet unlucky. Almut hits Tobias with her car, leading them to spend significant time together in the hospital waiting room.
From this point on the story line is inconsistent. We see many clips from the past, present, and future while having no time stamps provided. This sequence is known as non-linear. It works to shrink a decade into just under two hours, yet it can become confusing. Throughout their time spent together, tragedy strikes and Almut struggles to grapple with the idea of being remembered. Her decision making becomes driven by a sense of urgency and anger, often leading to selfish and reckless choices that hurt the people around her.
What makes this movie worth watching is the wonder it provokes within the viewer. It causes you to leave the theater questioning the characters choices, reminiscing about the heartbreaking scenes, and most importantly wanting more. The reality of life is that time is never in our favor. Sometimes we get dealt a bad hand for no apparent reason, but the thing that sets people apart is whether they focus on the present or dwell on their future legacy. We live in time perfectly depicts this.
