On January 25, the Mosaic Youth Theatre Department shared their performance “Songs for the People,” a show filled with the cultural legacy of Black artistry, at the Bloomfield Township Public Library, courtesy of the Friends of the Bloomfield Township Public Library. The Mosaic Youth Theatre is an after school program that offers singing, acting, and tech opportunities. “Songs of the People” was a student-driven performance showcasing overlooked talent from the Metro Detroit area. The kids performed 15 songs, ranging from “Shining Star” by Earth Wind and Fire to “Blackbird” by the Beatles, each song accompanied by dances.
“I actually learned about the program through my school,” said Charisma Ali, a student in the program.
“I attend the Detroit Edison Public School Academy and Mosaic actually did a residency at my school,” Ali said. “We did a few weeks of programming and they invited us to come and join the afterschool company… I heard people singing Hamilton in a circle and I decided this was the place I wanted to be.”
The program offers opportunities to volunteer or donate at mosiacdetroit.org, and will be putting on a performance entirely by students in August 2025 (date to be determined).
