This year’s Homecoming, with the theme “Bloomfield Music Festival” is approaching quickly, bringing a note of joy and excitement throughout the school community. Every year, a new Homecoming theme emerges from the walls of Student Leadership, setting the tone for spirit week and the dance. Here’s what you need to know:
Music is believed to be a really inclusive topic. There are various genres, many of which can be appreciated by the student body. Mrs. Laliberte, one of Bloomfield Hills’ Student Leadership Advisors, touches on this.
“I’m excited about this year’s theme. I hope the students really enjoy it,” Mrs. Laliberte said. “Music, hopefully, is something that everybody loves. It should be something that everybody really gets into. And it’s something that should bring everybody together. I think that music is a universal language.”
There are four sub-themes this year, with each grade having its own musical genre. Seniors are Country, Juniors are Rock N’ Roll, Sophomores are Disco, and Freshmen are Electronic.
Junior Ellie BenEzra thinks that Rock N’ Roll is the best theme for this year. “Honestly, completely unbiased, I think rock and roll is the coolest theme,” BenEzra said. “There’s so much to do with it. I feel like there’s ’80s rock, classic rock, and other types. It has such a look, and we can really do a lot with it.”
During the week, the school holds two assemblies: Black Hawk Games and Pep Rally. Black Hawk Games are on Thursday and have six games that students may sign up for. There are also a few games teachers may sign up for. Two fan favorites are Tug-O-War and Dodgeball. Seniors play the Freshmen, Sophomores play the Juniors, and winners play each other. This event brings fire to all of the grades, causing each grade to cheer and participate.
“My favorite part of Homecoming is probably Black Hawk Games,” said Sophomore Quinn Canner. “That is what I’m really looking forward to, along with the rest of Spirit Week. I’m very excited.”
The Pep Rally is on Friday and hypes the school up for the Homecoming Football Game that night. Fall sports are honored, Dr. Hartley addresses the student body, the marching band plays, the girls and boys dance team performs, the teachers dance, Homecoming Royalty is announced, and fun activities occur throughout. These traditions are valued by the entire school and are looked forward to the entire week.
During the week, there are also spirit days for each school day; however, for this particular year, there are only four due to Rosh Hashanah on Tuesday. Monday is concert or band t-shirt day, Wednesday is anything but a backpack day, Thursday is spirit packages or grade color day, and Friday is Black Hawk spirit.
A few weeks before Homecoming Spirit Week, Student Leadership puts together a spirit package personalized for each grade sub-theme. Each package requires a t-shirt, noise maker, and a few accessories. Students wear these on Friday to exhibit grade spirit.
Bloomfield Music Festival will be put on the week of September 22-26, and the dance will be on the 27th. Don’t forget to show your school spirit!
