On September 16, Mrs. Scott’s kinesiology class took a field trip to Wayne State University to hear motivational speaker Chris Singleton.
Chris is a motivational speaker on behalf of the Get To Foundation, which is a charity organization on a mission to inspire people to be more positive.
Alan Milch, a student on the trip, shared, “Chris made me rethink my negative outlook on my daily tasks. I went home that day feeling lucky that I got to do my homework to make me smarter, which is what I really think Chris wanted me to take away from that.”
The foundation was started in memory of Ben Jones, a Bloomfield Hills football coach who always inspired his players by reminding them that getting to play football is a gift and not a chore; they have the privilege of playing. Chris felt connected to the message of the foundation after his mom was murdered in a racially motivated killing. Instead of wallowing in his grief, Chris now travels around the country speaking about how he gets to continue living his life while keeping his mom’s memory alive.
“The hope was that my students realized how lucky they are to get to do these amazing things, not only inside school, but outside of it also. If I can motivate just one kid to have a more positive mindset, then this field trip did exactly what it was supposed to.” says Mrs. Scott.
Another audience member from BHHS, Rayne Binder, fulfilled Mrs. Scott’s hope, commenting, “ I couldn’t relate to all of his experiences, but sometimes when I’m feeling down or stressed, I think about what he said.”
Chris works to fulfill the message of the Get To foundation and boost positivity in people’s lives.
