Welcome to Sloane’s Showtime Sessions: a column where I, an avid movie-watcher, share my opinions on the latest movies in theaters and streaming in your living rooms. Have a movie suggestion to share? Leave me a note in the comments.
AI has taken over the world. It has replaced jobs, become a part of our daily lives, and only continues to grow. Tron: Ares is a Sci-fi/Action movie about the entrance of AI programs into the real-world. The movie is directed by Joachim Ronning and stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters.
Ares (Jared Leto) is an AI program that originates from a digital world of its own. Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters) works alongside his mother to run the digital world they created and keep track of their AI programs. Eve Kim (Greta Lee) works in competition against Julian Dillinger. They both are racing to find a formula called the “Permanence Code.” Julian is a greedy and selfish character while Eve is a sentimental and highly-determined character. Eve has a self motive for the code as she simply wants to finish the work her deceased sister didn’t get to finish before she passed away. Whereas, Julian only wants the code so he can make money for himself.
It took a while before the movie provided this background knowledge on why the so-called “Permanence Code” was so important to Eve and Julian. The beginning of the movie was confusing as it had given no prior knowledge of what was happening with the conflict between the two characters and why they had so much hatred for each other, or in other words, the amount of competition between the two.
The movie was presented in 3D and the theater provided 3D glasses. The imaging and graphics of the movie were spectacular and truly felt like I was in a digital world while watching. The colors, designs, and timing of the graphics were in my opinion, the best part of the movie. However, if you’re someone who gets head-aches easily, I’d be concerned about the amount of flashing-lights and intense image-changing throughout the 2 hours.
The movie includes lots of action-packed scenes and an immense amount of fighting between characters. It truly is a thrill as you watch the characters fight and take part in dangerous activities all while watching the scenes in 3D. The movie had a surprising ending and I certainly was never bored while watching. Overall, I’d rate this movie a 7/10 as the plot could’ve been more telling and understandable from the start and not 30 minutes from the opening-scene.
