Bites in the bubble
BHHS has a crucial location next to a wide variety of eateries to enjoy. Whether it is after school, before practice, or even a quick bite in the morning, the Bloomfield bubble doesn’t come short of options. We, staff of the Hawkeye, have decided to put the local foods to the test. Considering the convenience of each eatery from BHHS, we created 3 categories to judge. First is walking distance, which entails Rio Wraps, a 2 minute walk from the school. Next would be the 5 minute driving distance. Within 5 minutes of driving, you could reach Pita Way, Szechuan Gourmet, or Kaku. The Last category is the farthest located from BHHs, being a 10 minute drive, which you find Olga’s or SaladWorks.
As we explore each option, there will be a rating out of 5, embodying the overall service, experiment, food, and environment.
Rio Wraps has always been a personal favorite, whether it’s an after practice meal, or a 2 minute walk from BHHS, Rio Wraps is a convenient eatery for all age groups. Taking the 2 minute walk from BHHS makes it so you don’t even have to go out of your way to enjoy their Quesario, a popular item on their menu. The Quesario is a classic cheese quesadilla for a fair price of 7.99. Rio Wraps also gives you the option to add meat for 2.5.
The fair prices isn’t just why I personally loved the chicken quesario. It had a balanced cheese to chicken ration which can be a common mistake when making something as simple as a quesadilla. The cheese was melted within the quesadilla and the chicken was warm which combined gave the overall piece a perfect temperature of not too hot, but not lukewarm and dissatisfying. The temperature and ratio wasn’t the only appeal of the well deserved review for Rio Wraps. When first ordering, the staff is patient, and helpful with their recommendation of a meal that represents their restaurant. The service was a great example of how they run their restaurant. There was barely a wait for the food which reflects how Rio Wraps prioritizes every customer.
As you can see, Rio wraps makes it worth the short walk and has earned an overall rating of 4.5/5 making it at the top of your next stop eateries.
Kaku is a delightful place to eat with their abundant choices of food ranging from sushi to poke bowls. Every time you walk in, the fresh aromas of seafood coat your nostrils along with the excellent customer service. I would totally give Kaku a 5 star rating.
There have been many times after playing sports linked with Bloomfield Hills High School that I was starving and needed to grab something to eat, and every time, my first choice is always Kaku. It is less than a 5 minute drive, and is walkable if needed.
I generally enjoy getting a large bowl with white rice as well as arugula. On top of the plentiful supply of carbs and greens, I generally add spicy tuna as well salmon pieces. Their spicy mayo is also delectable. It is generally very hard to make a great poke bowl that has enough of each food, but Kaku does it almost perfectly every time. If you are not the biggest fan of poke bowls, there is a large array of sushi or nigiri that you can also buy for a very reasonable price. Finally, one of my favorite things to get at Kaku are the drinks. They have amazing and a vast amount of ramune drinks that are delicious and cold as they are stocked in the freezer.
I have never had a bad experience at Kaku and definitely recommend this place if you are ever in the area.
I had a delightful experience at Szechuan Gourmet. When I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly staff member at the order counter where he helped me navigate the menu and decide which of the many dishes to try. I ordered the General Tso Combination Plate which came with lightly fried chicken coated in their sweet general tso sauce, fried rice, and an egg roll. All for the generous price of 14 dollars. I really enjoyed the chicken because of its light crunch and the sweet sauce. However, the fried rice was dry and lacked flavor. But, the egg roll was really tasty and it had a nice crunch to it.
Overall, I give Szechuan Gourmet a 4 out of 5. The portions are huge at a low price. Located right across the school on Telegraph, Szechuan Gourmet is a great place to pick up after school.
Located just a few minutes from school on the other side of Telegraph, Pita Way is the perfect spot if you are looking for some quick and delicious Mediterranean food. It is walkable from school, however it is more convenient to drive there. My personal favorite is their Quesopita, which is a quesadilla with Mediterranean food inside. I would give it a 5 star rating because it comes out warm, crunchy, and it tastes amazing. Another popular item there are the Fire Fries. They are crispy fries tossed in a chipotle sauce and topped with cheese, and they taste like heaven; I would also give the fries a 5 star rating. Additionally, they have bowls, sandwiches, salads, and soups. The service is exceptional and the employees are all very friendly and make conversation, while also preparing your food in a timely manner. It is fairly priced, and you simply cannot go wrong with Pita Way, which I would give an overall rating of 5 stars.
The drive from BHHS to Olgas is 10 minutes, but it is not worth it. To start off, the snackers are the best part. The seasoning is very good and easily would make these a five star after school bite to eat, that is if they put enough. Our snackers were under seasoned and tasted more like pita earning a 3/5 star rating. The broccoli soup was good and earned a 4 star rating but was nothing special. We also ordered falafel and a grilled chicken wrap that we gave a 2 star rating because both were dry and lacked flavor. The chicken to pita ratio was poor and there was not nearly enough chicken for the large pita. The falafel had limited sauce that was sparsely placed. Overall Olgas earned a 2/5 star rating, if you are looking for a quick after school snack Olgas is not the place.Â
SaladWorks is a bit farther from the school, with a travel time of around 10 minutes, but it is worth the extra distance. SaladWorks is combined with Fruttabowls, and the combination offers a large variety of foods that are all very customizable. Due to there being so many great options to choose from, one of the best deals is the You Pick Two for $12.50. You can pick two of these options: A half- salad, a half-panini, a smoothie, or a small soup. My favorite choice is a signature half-salad with a half-grilled cheese. The signature salads have a similar setup to chipotle, you choose a base of a variety of greens, pasta, or grains. On top of your base, you can choose up to five toppings (including protein) for no extra charge.
Overall, I would rate SaladWorks 4.5/5 stars because it offers various delicious foods, even for individuals with dietary restrictions and allergies.
