While the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour’s world number 1 was not much of a competition toward the end of 2025, with Aryna Sabalenka finishing with a large margin, the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) (mens) Tour came down to the wire until the very last tournament.
Italian player, Jannik Sinner, started off 2025 as the world number 1. Spanish player, Carlos Alcaraz, began the year as world number 2. These two were almost perfect when playing against opponents besides one another. They both faced extreme adversity, which allowed them to uncover and exhibit their true greatness. In addition, they both statistically achieved their most successful years of their career thus far, winning 2 Grand Slam Titles each.
The official man that won the race was twenty-two year old Carlos Alcaraz. After completing the 2024 season with little success on hard courts, Alcaraz had something to prove to the world. He broke countless personal and historical records, leading him to winning the battle to the top, world number one. Tristan Omtvedt, a junior at BHHS, said, “The best match I have ever watched of Alcaraz was the 2023 Wimbledon Final, against Novak Djokovic, winning his first slam on grass.” He then said, “Although I wanted Sinner to end world number one, I had a feeling that Alcaraz would. Sinner had a much more successful and historic season, but Alcaraz most definitely did this year, hence why he is world number one now.”
Twenty-four year old Jannik Sinner began the 2025 year with accusations of taking steroids, which ultimately suspended him from February to May, luckily not taking him out of any crucial tournaments. Kinsley Kurns, a junior at BHHS, said, “Sinner had a more historic season than Alcaraz because of the doping scandal as well as his wrist injury, then coming back to do so well.”
Additionally, Luca DeAngelis, a junior at BHHS, said, “At the beginning of the year, I really thought Sinner would finish as the world number 1, but once Alcaraz won the US Open, I realized it would be him.” He added, “I think Jannik Sinner will be better next year because of the US Open loss and not ending world number 1.”
As unanimously agreed upon by many, Alcaraz and Sinner’s five and a half hour match in the French Open Final was believed to be their best ever match against each other, which occurred on June 8, 2025. Jannik Sinner was just a point away from winning the championship three consecutive times, however Carlos Alcaraz never gave up, saved these match points, and ultimately came back to win that set as well as the final fifth set. Luca DeAngelis also reflected on the final. He said, “After those saved match points, it was all Alcaraz from there. I never thought that would happen, but I knew Alcaraz was going to win after that.” Sinner kept the match close, however it was not enough.
Tristan Omtvedt, who watched the entire match, depicts this match as, “5.5 hours of absolutely beautiful tennis and the best match that both of them have ever played.”
After this final, Sinner came into Wimbledon to fight back, in which he won every match with little adversity, claiming the title. Sinner had additionally won the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, securing his second title of the year, doubling his total in his career. Alcaraz then pulled the momentum back in his direction, winning the final Grand Slam, the US Open, with statistical dominance. It then came down to the final significant tournament of the year, the Nitto ATP Finals, in which Alcaraz had to win his first three matches to claim the world number one position. He did in fact do this, officially being awarded the trophy of being ranked world number one.
On and off the court, Sinner and Alcaraz are friends. They share the court with a smile, and they both give each other hugs after matches, as well as consistently comforting each other after matches with one another, respecting one another’s game. After Alcaraz achieved the world number one position, Sinner was interviewed about it. He honestly said, “If it’s any other player than me, I’d always choose him [Alcaraz].”
These two men led the ATP Tour by a great margin in almost every category. Their statistics for the year were very similar. They both won two Grand Slams. Alcaraz won three Masters 1000 Titles, and Sinner won one. Alcaraz won three ATP 500 tournaments, and Sinner won two. Sinner additionally won the Nitto ATP Finals and Alcaraz won their head to head matchups in 2025 three to two.
For the future, many individuals do not see other plans for the mens’ tour. Kinsley Kurns said, “I think that if Sinner or Alcaraz have an off day, Djokovic has a chance. But if not, nobody else has a chance.”
However, Tristan Omtvedt has high hopes for Sinner in the 2026 season. He said, “As long as he stays healthy, I believe that Sinner will have his best season yet next year. I think he could even win the calendar slam.” The calendar slam is winning all four Grand Slams, which has been close to occurring, but has never happened in history. At extremely young ages to be on the tour, both of these individuals have bright futures and will continue to break more records in the tennis world.
